Re-writing of Karate's History
By Sean Wong
Much has been written about karate's history but none has been copied and re-printed as many times as an article simply entitled Karate History. This article was written about 13 years ago by Ontario's own Joy Ang and Kevin Northrup. It is one of the most concise and copied article on the topic. Its original purpose was to be a part of Ontario's own National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) but it has since then been adopted nationally and found in the NCCP's workbook.
Karate History does not represent every style of Karate. Rather, its focus is on those recognized by the WKF. These styles are Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Wado-Ryu, and Shito-Ryu. Even with is limited representation, the root of all styles originate from the island of Okinawa, Japan. Ang and Northrup stay true to this fact in their piece resulting in content that is universally applicable.
With 25 years practicing karate and the primary contributor to the article, Northrup is proud of what he considers to be his legacy to Karate. Ang holds a treasure chest of medals and has secured her reputation in the ring during her youth. Today, Ang and Northrup are nationally certified referees and have been training since 1982 and 1979 respectively. You can find them both training in Shotokan with Shihan Tominaga. Northrup also holds a black belt in Okinawa Goju-Ryu.Nassim - On Top of the World
