Coach Jennings Readies Team Ontario

By Sean Wong

Coach Jennings has prepared his battle plan and readies team hopefuls for their best performance at the National Black Belt Championships scheduled this year in July. After an enormous effort at last year’s nationals, Ontario had to settle for second place behind Quebec’s dominant presence.  Although only 4 points behind “la belle province”, Ontario pulled away from all other provinces. It was the closest to winning the prize of Canada’s best provincial team for close to 10 years.

This past February, coach Jennings put athletes to work on winning techniques as well as agility and strengthening drills. His efforts are clearly aimed towards surpassing last year’s achievements. He and his crew of Sensei Brad Jones and Sensei Howard Crocker see their efforts as touching more than just a provincial gain. They wish to bring out the best in their athletes and hone their skills to be an impact on the national team. It is for the benefit of these athletes why they dedicate their valued time and knowledge.

Canada has been on the world’s stage for Karate since 2005 when BC’s talented Toshihide Uchiage earned Bronze at world championships for Karate. In 2006, Phillippe Poirier of Quebec and Nassim Varasteh of Ontario also returned with a bronze and silver respectively. With the bar raised this high for the current year, coach Jennings has his sights set on the whole picture. He appreciates the level of competition that the other provinces bring in order to draw out the best in his team. In the grand scheme of Karate competition, the entire coaching crew recognizes that the ultimate goal is to prepare Ontario’s athletes in a quest for a national placement.

Coach Jennings and his crew gladly volunteer their time and knowledge to this pursuit. In doing so, they receive the satisfaction that in doing so their contribution is making Karate in Ontario better. Ontario is very lucky.

Photos of the team hopefuls can be found in our new gallery.
